Reflections on a True Holiday Spectacular

2008-01-08

On December 9, the CGCC Community Arts Program presented its second annual holiday event in Overtown. The venue was the Historic Saint Agnes’ Episcopal Church built between 1923 and1930 to house one of Miami’s oldest African-American congregations. There, amidst a mix of architectural styles that range neo-classical and mission elements, youth of the CGCC Community Arts Program’s Conservatory for the Arts, Young Musicians’ Orchestra and Young Musicians’ Jazz Mentors offered a splendid community-service outreach through music.

The final attendance topped 1,525 people who jumped to their feet in appreciation for a blend of classical, jazz and spiritual renditions for the Christmas season. Joining the Community Arts Program were special guests: University of Miami Frost School of Music Dean and jazz pianist Shelly Berg, jazz bass player Chuck Bergeron, The Miami Pan Symphony Steel Drum Orchestra, and organist Robert Heath.

The CGCC Community Arts Program thanks its partner in this effort: The Links, Incorporated, Greater Miami Chapter. This group is part of an international not-for-profit organization of more than 10,000 women of color committed to enriching, sustaining, and ensuring the culture and economic survival of children and families of African ancestry by focusing on service in the community. This is a perfect match for the CGCC Community Arts Program and its mission to serve a diverse community through the transforming power of the arts by providing educational and culturally enriching experiences.

The December 9 experience was best summarized by an attendee who said, “You have filled our hearts and spirits; thank you!” How good it is to be part of an institution that continues to give to the greater community.
