Music Theory
Knowing about music theory is like knowing not only how to turn on your iPod, but knowing how the music it plays is created, sounded, and written down. How does music work? How do we write down all the different sounds and identify the spaces between those sounds? Want to really tune into how music works? Yep, that’s what music theory is all about. It’s all the cool stuff in music that you’ll learn to turn on with your head and ears.

Group & 1-on-1 Lessons
Here’s another fun and important part of your music education. It’s an opportunity to learn how to play an instrument (or, program the iPod)! Beginners will learn the basics of an instrument together, in a group, with a teacher. The next level will be 1-on-1 lessons with a teacher. The time frame that a student moves from group to 1-on-1 lessons varies. But don’t worry; we let you know when it’s time to move. Group or 1-on-1, it’s all good!

Peer Shout Outs
Students, teachers, and mentors rally to hear and discover from other students. Students perform for each other and show what they’ve been working on and discuss what they’re learning. It’s a peer prep rally to gear up for Theory Testing and Juries.

Theory Testing & Juries
Here, these words are your friends: testing and juries. Theory Testing and Juries is the ultimate reality show where students complete a written music theory test and perform, individually, for teachers (a.k.a. the “jury” oooooo!). But don’t worry; there is no Simon Cowell among us (as long as students study and practice, that is)! Basically, we want to see how well students have studied and practiced and, from that, provide constructive expectations to maximize results. BTW: Parents receive a written evaluation.

360 Forums
Let’s bring the learning experience full circle! These three-hour sessions include group music activities where parents, students, and teachers together engage in music learning (e.g., reading music and making instruments sound). 360 Forums also include group music learning and motivational fun (e.g., sight-singing and making a music video) with students in one room while parents in another room discover successful techniques that maximize their understanding and potential as their child’s greatest champion and teacher.

Concert Activities
Throughout the year, we have opportunities for you to hear music, and see the seasoned professionals who make it, in action. And on occasion, students are part of the concert action! We often have additional information on these in advance of the date. Other dates are a fun surprise. Stay tuned!

Center Stage Performances
Now, here’s your chance to really shine for family and friends: to take center stage and “strut your stuff” in a real concert setting. And, the best part is this: It’s guaranteed to be fun! We’re all proud of what each student learns throughout the year.

Active-learning Ensembles
Active-learning ensembles offer a cool after-school opportunity. String students join the Junior or Advanced Young Musicians’ String Orchestra to participate in and study repertoire that spans the classical, jazz and contemporary (commissioned works) genres. Active-learning ensemble training sessions involve ensemble music making, problem solving and repertoire exposure. Coaching sessions, weekly group rehearsals, and an average of four public performances provide a solid foundation for the learning process. With an overall focus towards well-rounded approaches to music learning, academically-based active-learning ensembles promise worthwhile perspectives into the professional music world while working on the challenges of literature, technique and ensemble. So why not, be cool after school!

Young Musicians’ Summer Master Classes
The Young Musicians’ Summer Master Classes are a summer extension of the CGCC Community Arts Program Conservatory for the Arts. Friday Master classes provide one-on-one dialogue and training with artists appearing on the CGCC Community Arts Program Summer Concert Series. Here’s an opportunity to receive training and glean from world-renowned musicians. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and valuable experience that add up to one cool summer.
