The 2009 Summer Concert Series opens with an outstanding sextet of players from the Arturo O’Farrill Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra. A prominent figure of the Afro-Cuban jazz movement, Arturo preserves much of the music made famous by his father, Chico O’Farrill. As a pianist/composer, Arturo is an acclaimed winner of the Latin Jazz USA Outstanding Achievement Award and comes by way of an impressive resume of collaborations with a wide spectrum of artists: Dizzy Gillespie, Steve Turre, Wynton Marsalis and Harry Belafonte, to name a few. In 2002, Arturo created the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra for Jazz at Lincoln Center. He continues to champion the demanding body of substantial music in the genre of Latin and Afro-Cuban Jazz.
