ARTURO O'FARRILL Afro-Latin Jazz Sextet
Thursday, June 04 — 08:00 PM — CGCC — Purchase Tickets

The 2009 Summer Concert Series opens with an outstanding sextet of players from the Arturo O’Farrill Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra. A prominent figure of the Afro-Cuban jazz movement, Arturo preserves much of the music made famous by his father, Chico O’Farrill. As a pianist/composer, Arturo is an acclaimed winner of the Latin Jazz USA Outstanding Achievement Award and comes by way of an impressive resume of collaborations with a wide spectrum of artists: Dizzy Gillespie, Steve Turre, Wynton Marsalis and Harry Belafonte, to name a few. In 2002, Arturo created the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra for Jazz at Lincoln Center. He continues to champion the demanding body of substantial music in the genre of Latin and Afro-Cuban Jazz. Be prepared for a combination of piano, trumpet, sax, bass, drums and percussion that will move you, literally, into an exhilarating and unforgettable evening!

“Arturo O’Farrill’s Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra combines the best aspects of a big horn sound with small-group finesse and flexibility.”
